4 Reasons Why You Should Take The GMAT
If you’re considering a postgraduate degree in business, you may have already heard of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) which assesses applicants for programmes such as MBA or MiM. While a GMAT is not required for most Master’s programmes, it can be well worth taking as a well-balanced result can add significant weight to your application.
The body behind GMAT, Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) has recently announced ten scholarships for applicants in Europe in 2023/24 to cover the test in addition to covering the costs of a 3-hour consultation and preparation with a specialist instructor.
The GMAT is a three-and-a-half-hour computer-based exam and it’s broken into four sections;
- Analytical Writing Assessment – 1 question with 30 minutes
- Integrated Reasoning – 12 questions with 30 minutes
- Quantitative Reasoning – 31 questions with 62 minutes
- Verbal Reasoning – 36 questions with 65 minutes
You can choose which order to complete the test and you are allowed two 8-minute breaks. The GMAT costs £225 and the test can be held in either a test centre or in the comfort of your own home.
4 reasons to complete a GMAT
Help your application stand out
While the GMAT is required for some courses, you can twist it to your advantage. It will demonstrate to business schools that you’re serious about studying business while also giving the impression you will go above and beyond for success.
Scoring over 700 will demonstrate you possess the skills needed to challenge postgraduate study.
Help you find your ideal course
There are countless postgraduate business courses available, but how would you know which one is best suited to your ability?
GMAC has a ‘my recommendation’ service which generates personalised course suggestions based on your GMAT score, and academic interests as well as considering the score of other applicants for which you are most likely to be offered a place.
Graduate Management Admissions Search Service (GMASS) is another tool provided by GMAC that gives top business schools the chance to connect to academic solid students.
Scholarships
Generous scholarships are offered yearly for both MBA and MiM courses. To be within an arm’s length to attain one, it’s worth doing everything and anything possible to raise your application above others. Some may ask for a GMAT, but for ones that don’t, a good score can significantly widen your chances.
Boost employability
GMATs are designed to help business schools select the best students for their courses. However, there is a secondary effect to taking the exam. A good GMAT score can be beneficial post-education. As you may have experienced before, interviews go through many different screening rounds and a good score can showcase your ability and skill set that is widely recognised by employers worldwide.
