5 Ways You Can Max Your CV Potential
The employment market is still as competitive as ever and showing your skills and experience on your CV is still a problem for graduates. Even for those with too much to boast about, attendance at a CV workshop may prove wasteful.
The importance of using online channels such as Linkedin and Instagram, and portfolio sites such as WordPress or Dropbox could lift the volume of what you have on offer. These can showcase your portfolio of work and CV which cannot be underestimated. Read our key tips to boost your employability.
Here are five do’s and don’ts to help you maximise your CV potential.
1- Be wary of what you post
It’s not uncommon for employers and recruiters to copy and paste emails into Facebook to screen a candidate. You should be very diligent about what it is you post online. You should aim to keep a tidy account with appropriate and uncompromising messages that won’t raise a red flag. Ideally, you should aim to apply with an email that is not associated with any of your social or forum channels.
2- Boost your LinkedIn profile
LinkedIn can be a powerful tool to back your CV. LinkedIn has an amazing feature called ‘Apply With Linkedin’ which is seen as a God-send for a one-step application on online job boards. They are also useful to remove the potential back-and-forth emails which can slow the application process.
To power charge your LinkedIn account, you can ask for recommendations from current and former employers and, if you are a good friend, give recommendations to others.
3- Your portfolio
You should never underestimate the power of a portfolio if you are studying a portfolio-driven role. WordPress allows users to build a website without the need for experience. With WordPress accounting for roughly 5% of the internet, it’s easy to see why. By downloading different themes and plug-ins, you can customise your site to be as user-friendly as possible. Here, you should add your portfolio of work and you can even include a ‘about me’ section. If you are not in a portfolio-driven role, you can still create one to showcase your vast experience or knowledge in a certain field.
4- Feature voluntary work
No matter how trivial it may sound, volunteering work gives employers insight into you. In addition, volunteering roles also provide the impression that end results and people are your motivation rather than money and lifestyle.
5- Be creative and different
There are people whose role is to look at various CVs daily and there is nothing so bland as constantly looking at the same style. But by being slightly creative, you can make your CV stand out from the crowd.
