The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is a centralised assessment introduced by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) for anyone wishing to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Anyone who wishes to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales after September 2021 must pass the SQE, unless they are eligible for transitional arrangements under the previous qualification route.

The SQE is divided into two stages:
  • SQE1: Focuses on legal knowledge through multiple-choice questions.
  • SQE2: Tests practical legal skills, including client interviewing, advocacy, and legal drafting.

The duration varies depending on individual preparation and work experience. Typically, candidates take between 12 to 24 months to complete both stages.

No. Candidates without a law degree can take the SQE, but they will need to gain the necessary legal knowledge through preparation courses.

  • SQE1: Typically offered twice a year (in January and July).

Booking your exams closes approximately five weeks before the assessment time so we advise you to apply for a loan at least six weeks ahead of the assessment date to allow time for your loan to be processed and your booking voucher code to be issued.

For SQE 1 (July 2025) the first date of the assessment window begins on 14th July 2025.
You can book your exam from 24th March 2025 until 21st May 2025.
FLK1 is scheduled to be examined between 14th July 2025-18th July 2025.
FLK 2 is scheduled to be examined between 21st July 2025-25th July 2025.
Results date is scheduled for 10th September 2025.
